Dates: June 6 & 7, 2009

Title: Pearl of the Sea Fine Silver Ring: Adornments for the Hands

The image above illustrates the style of ring you will construct and will learn in this class:

1) Learn to measure ring size for proper fit
2) Creating a wide band shake
3) Using Syringe
4) Setting a Fresh Water Pearl

You will also learn numerous strategies for working with Art Clay Silver effectively:

-How to keep your metal clay from drying out and if it does, how you can save it.
-How to repair cracks.
-How to sand metal safely before and after firing.
-How to utilize every ounce of metal clay.
-How to determine how much oil is enough and what is too much.
-How to patina your piece to enhance texture.

Level: This class is open to intermediate level students. Pre-requsite: At least one basic instructional class in metal clay is required.
Class sizes are small: Limit 6 students

What to bring to class:

650 Art Clay Silver (Available to purchase in class)
*Plan on budgeting at least 2 pkg. of 20g 650 Low Fire Art Clay Silver
(also available in 50g packages)
*Art Clay Paper Type 10g (optional)
*10g 650 Art Clay Silver Syringe. Packages of ACS syringes are available without tips, and with three tips. (If buying syringe for first time I recommend buying the one with three tips first, then as you need more syringe type clay you need only buy
the package w/o tips.)
*Clay cutter
*Tissue blade
*Clear roller
*Measuring Slats
*Graph mat - smooth plastic cutting mat at least 5"x 8"
*4"x4" Teflon sheet
*Rubber block small or large
*Agate burnisher
*Particulate mask
*Assortment of wet and dry abrasive paper (180-600 grit)
Salon files
*Needle files (Do not mix your files. Use one set for filing clay and one set for sterling silver.)
*Stainless steel brushes - long or short bristles
Sharpie black permanent marker - fine point
Apron
Note book to take notes
3x5 note card
*Awl or Needle tool
*6 inch ruler
*Wooden Ring Mandrel with stand
***Metal Ring Mandrel (available to borrow in class if you don't have one)
***Round nose pliers
***Flat nose pliers
***Chain nose pliers
***Flush cutters that will cut 20 gauge wire
***Plastic mallet or rawhide mallet
*Steel Bench block and pad

NOTE: 8mm Fresh Water Pearl for ring will be available for sale in class.


Copy of seller's permit if you do not want to pay taxes on non-tool items

These items are available at craft stores:
Small paint brush #1 tapered small tip (used with Art Clay Paste)
Small paint brush with at least a #2 flat tip
(used for dusting dry clay after sanding)
Small plastic spray bottle
X-Acto Knife or Craft Knife
Scissors (short about 5')
Templates: Small circles/squares/triangles
Rubber stamps
